“Oh no, not another article on setting goals,” you may be thinking. Figuring out what we want to achieve in life and how to get there is not always the most enjoyable of topics to think about, especially if your previous resolutions didn’t go quite as planned. Setting goals can be difficult to do, but whether in the area of health, wealth, fitness or work, they are important.
So with this in mind, how can you set goals better?
In order to achieve success, your goals need to be attainable. It sounds obvious, but many don’t recognise how unrealistic their own career expectations can be, and are then disappointed when they fail. Your goals need to be based on your own journey, your own set of challenges, your unique lifestyle and your unique set of needs. And they need to be realistic. Goals are not the end destination, they are stepping stones to helping you get there. So remember to set smaller, short-term goals before helping you achieve a long-term goal.
Someone your age in exactly the same role as you will not always have the same goals as you. Everyone’s ideas of success is different and that’s OK. I always recommend speaking with a leadership coach who can help you identify your areas of strength and weakness and assist you in mapping out your career trajectory according to your distinctive attributes.
If your long-term goal is to be promoted within six months, what are the short-term goals that you need to achieve before you get there? Perhaps in that six months, you will need to have completed certain training manuals and courses. Then you need to give yourself end dates for completion before your long-term goal is reached. And if things didn’t work out as planned, (perhaps due to restructuring in the company or changes in your own desires), it’s fine to revisit the goal and adjust it accordingly.
