Leadership in the workplace has always been a dynamic concept that evolves over time. It is unique to every company, industry and even country. Leadership techniques that worked pre-Covid-19 may not work today because leaders – and the people they work with – are finding themselves in a very different head space. There is large-scale uncertainty with the Russia/Ukraine war, increasing petrol prices and inflation, ongoing load shedding – and a myriad of other uncertainties. And where there is uncertainty, there is doubt and fear.
Modern-day leaders need to adapt their leadership styles to align with this era of uncertainty. Employees’ and employers’ roles and needs have changed. Not only are more people working from home, more people are also favouring finding a work-life integration and rejecting outdated, authoritarian leadership styles. We are all fragile.
It is now a norm to have teams working from home or in a hybrid arrangement. It is challenging trying to build a company culture if you don’t get face-to-face time with your team every day. Even though it is challenging, it is still possible to build a culture online. First, you need to lay a foundation of psychological safety and trust. Once you have your foundation, you need to spend some time defining each employee’s output clearly, so they understand what is expected from them. It’s also critical to keep communicating the company’s goals, vision and mission during this time so that they become entrenched. Lastly, set regular online and face-to-face meetings, and make sure you attend them to keep communicating with the team as a whole.
Employee turnover in South Africa has increased substantially. Remchannel gathered data from a survey of 82 South African companies’ HR departments. The data revealed that “More than 36% of all employment terminations in 2021 were due to resignations, higher than the 28% to 32% seen before Covid-19.” People don’t want to settle for workplaces that brew a toxic culture and leaders who don’t want to listen to their concerns. People have been experiencing high levels of hardship – so it’s up to leaders to create a culture that ensures that employees feel psychologically safe.
Technology is moving so fast; it is not easy keeping up with all the latest trends and developments. However, those new developments could keep a company at the forefront of its industry – and keep it relevant. Not only that, a workforce that harnesses and embraces changing trends and technology is more likely to feel high levels of satisfaction in the workplace because it promotes skills growth. As a leader, you need to take a collaborative approach to embracing technology to make sure your workforce understands its importance, and that you have their buy-in right from the get-go. When changes are made, without context and collaboration, it breeds mistrust.
When you, as a leader, keep learning and growing, you also indirectly building a stronger team. It means that you are investing in your team because you will filter new insights into the way your team operates. It also nurtures a culture of learning in the workplace. According to Harvard Business Review, “… people with a growth mindset are better at dealing with change, solving problems, successfully implementing and giving feedback, and accomplishing goals.” Continuous learning will also help you to act proactively instead of reactively. Working in hindsight may present important workplace lessons but being prepared is a more professional leadership approach.
